This is most likely due to you using PASV mode to connect, when you should be using PORT mode. You can change these settings in your FTP program's settings.
Below, is how you can do this for CuteFTP, client we recommend and use ourselves.
This is taken right out of the program's 'Help' file:
" Socket error = #10060
10060 is a Connection Time-out error that usually appears when the client does not receive a response from the server for a specific command.
Most often this occurs when you try to connect in PASV mode to a server that prefers PORT for data connections. If you see an error log similar to the one following, right click the problem site and choose Site Properties, click the TYPE tab and change the Data Connection Type to Use PORT.
COMMAND:> PASV
227 Entering Passive Mode (xxx,xx,xxx,xx,x,xxx).
COMMAND:> LIST
STATUS:> Connecting ftp data socket xxx.xx.xxx.xx:xxxx...
ERROR:> Can't connect to remote server. Socket error = #10060.
ERROR:> Failed to establish data socket.
If you still receive a 10060 error, the server may be trying to send a listing for a very large directory (with many thousands of files) causing the client to time-out while waiting. Try increasing the time-out value under Tools > Global Options > Transfer > Reconnect and resume in [n] seconds if nothing received, to a higher value, such as 45 or 60 seconds."
Hi guys, I am pretty satisfied with your service. Yes, I have experienced some downtime issues with my boxes, but you guys have always been right there for me, at my beck and call whenever I need you. Additionally, you guys are always more than fair when it comes to helping me configure my boxes with my DirectAdmin control panel. Overall, I am very pleased with the service, both in terms of the hardware I receive from you as well as the customer service. Prices seem to be quite fair too. Thanks, Ephi
We're Happy with our 1 Gigabit Server AYK Solutions! AYK Solutions provides all our back-end server infrastructure for our video streaming sites which burn up about 200 GB of data every day. I have had nothing less then 1 MB/second downloads from all the servers that I have had from them. Their technical support saved me several times, and their tech support is 24/7 and responsive. I currently have a Quad Xeon on a 1 gigE port for WAY LESS then any other dedicated server provider
I have been using AYK for about 2 years now and they are always on top of any issues I have. They have gone over and beyond helping me with any problems that come up with the server and they have never said "no" to any of my requests. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable server company.
